Miah was bitten by the acro bug early in her life. At just three years old, her friend’s mum came to kindy to demonstrate the sport and she’s been hooked ever since. Find out more about this strong and flex-tastic sportsgirl as we interview her for this month’s ‘Spotlight On’.
Age: 8 (year 3)
Sport/s you play: I’ve done acrobatics since i was 3 years old
What is your favourite sport and why do you love it? Acrobatics is my favourite sport. I love learning new skills and pushing myself to become stronger every session. I also love all my acro friends and coaches. They are so encouraging and supportive.
How did you become involved in the sport? I was 3 and in Kindergarten when I made a friend called Nevaeh and her mum, Mel the owner of my Club, came into Kindergarten one day to demonstrate some skills with us and I loved it. So I went along to do a trial and I loved it and never looked back.
How often do you train and what does a typical training session involve? I train Mondays, Tue, Wed, Friday and Saturday mornings which is a total of 15 hours a week. My typical training sessions involve strength, conditioning, flexibility and also specific skill learning.
What is the hardest part about playing your chosen sport? I think the hardest part is learning new skills with my Trio but honestly I love being challenged and that’s what i love about acro you are always challenged every session.
Describe any challenges you’ve had to overcome to develop your skills in your chosen sport. I think the biggest challenge for me has been living with Juvenile Recurrent Paratitis which I don’t get very often but when I do get it I can be very unwell and out of action for weeks at a time. Luckily as I’m getting older i’m not getting it as often so it’s allowing me to have more energy and not miss as much school or acro anymore, but when I was getting it often every few months I just wasn’t well enough to train with my full potential.
Do you have goals you are training to achieve in your chosen sport? Yes, my goal is to make it onto the National Squad or to Worlds one day i haven’t competed a lot but i love competing and can’t wait until Covid 19 is over and I can hopefully compete soon.
Who inspires you? Laura is one of the amazing athletes from my club Team Adrenalin. Laura is on the National Squad Team she is a National club champion 2019 and she is in a senior Trio as a top. She trains so hard and she is so focused and strong, I want to be like her one day.
What do you want to be when you’re older? I want to be a super model or a vet. I love animals and I love being in front of the camera.
