Name: Abigail Spelde
Year at school: Year 9
What is your favourite sport and why do you love it? Ice Hockey, because I get to skate on the ice and play in a team with my friends
How often do you have to train and what does a typical training session involve? I train twice a week and usually play 2 games a weekend, we go through drills and work on skill development
What is the hardest part about playing your chosen sport? It can be very physical and rough (but I love that), I play against both boys my age and adult women.
Describe any challenges you’ve had to overcome to develop your skills in your chosen sport: I suffered from Osgood-Schlatters disease which is something that can happen when you have a growth spurt and play Hockey, I needed to take 6 months off to recover last year.
Do you have any rituals or routines you do before a big match? I don’t like removing my jewelry as it’s a superstition for me, I also say a little prayer before the game. I like listening to music before the game to get me pumped up.
Do you have goals you are training to achieve in your chosen sport? I really want to make the Australian team in the next couple of years so I need to work on all my skills to get to that next level.
Who inspires you (could be someone you know or someone famous)? My older brother, he just played for Australia at the world championships in Iceland. He’s always inspired me to get better. Also, my coach Mel who is one of the Australian women’s captains.
What do you want to be when you’re older? I love anything to do with fashion, beauty and hair, so anything I can do in that field would be awesome.
